Can IVF be sex-selective?
Every pregnancy is a difficult time for expectant parents. Apart from being happy to have their own baby, many people are also curious about whether IVF can choose the sex of the baby. So can parents decide the gender of their baby? Let's read on!
Sex Selection Regulations for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
In fact, according to Taiwan's Artificial Reproduction Act, parents are not allowed to choose the sex of their baby. The only exception is if the couple has a genetic disease, such as hemophilia or red-green color blindness, etc., and then they can find out the sex of the embryo through genetic screening to rule out the risk of the fetus suffering from a genetic disease.
Technical aspects of sex selection in IVF
Although gender selection is not possible under Taiwanese law, it is technically possible. Chromosome testing - commonly known as PGS/PGT-A - performed prior to implantation of the embryo during the IVF procedure can check for normal chromosome counts in the embryo. Since the chromosome test involves the sex chromosomes, it can also help determine the sex of the embryo.
